I'm trying to find classes for my young nephew (2.5 years old) to learn ASL, he's in St. Charles. Because of his age, driving 45 min to Naperville, for instance, isn't doable. I've moved out of state and can't teach him to sign, so we want to take him to class and he can skype with me to practice. I can't seem to find *anything*. Any suggestions?

Hi Joy. Great question and one I think we've all had or will have. This is what my family found useful. Your Hearing Itinerant teacher or yourself should be able to go into the class and open discussion about it. Teach the children what it is that your child is doing/using and why. I find that once you take away the unknown the kids don't see it any longer as anything more than part of your child. My HI actually went as far as in servicing all the classes in that particular grade. My child is now in 3rd and I am not sure how much more we need to do this as all these students have heard it and learned about it 3 times. You can also contact the CI or HI manufacturer, they generally have cute coloring books and you could possibly get one for each child in your child's class. I did that more for the education of the children's parents that the children themselves, I've found the fear comes from parents more so than from the student. You'll find with this short brief discussion a lot of the unknown is answered and the kids won't feel obliged to ask your child or to "climb into their ear" as I used to say to find out what "that" is... Good luck!
