ITHI (IL Teachers of the Hearing Impaired) upcoming conference March 1-3, LOTS of topics that may interest parents…. Take a look….

IL Hands & Voices representatives are working with Fara Harper regarding some crossover conference materials and information between our upcoming CENTRAL Moms Night Inn, which starts on ITHI’s end day.  Here is what Fara has to say about the confrence:

Our 48th annual conference’s theme is “Diversity Within the Classroom: Communication, Learning Styles, Culture, Technology.”   The conference will be held at the Hilton in Springfield, Illinois, on March 1-3, 2012.   The mission of our non-profit organization is to provide professional development and enhancement to our 400+ members.  Typical conference attendance ranges from 350-400 professionals (i.e.: teachers, supervisors, speech pathologists, social workers) in the field of education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Engaging in break out presentations, the participants will articulate techniques for improved teaching skills, creating networks with other educators, responding to student and family needs, and coping with difficult situations that may arise in the educational setting.

We have invited Howard Rosenblum, the current Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of the Deaf and a former Senior Attorney at Equip for Equality in Chicago, Illinois to be our Friday morning keynote speaker.  The Saturday morning keynote speaker will be Dr. Maribel Gárate. We are honored to have her. Dr. Gárate is an assistant professor in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University. She received two Masters Degrees from Gallaudet University – Deaf Education: Elementary and American Sign language Linguistics. Her Doctorate degree is on Bilingual Deaf Education.  She also has written several publications focusing on bilingualism.  Both will present to over 300 members focusing on Deaf Education.  Our Cultural Event will be a performance by John Maucere, a well-known Deaf performer.

We would love to invite parents to our conference because parents are our students’ first teachers and parents play an important role in the education of our students.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
